Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is the city situated in Canadian Quebec, about thirty miles to the southeast from Montreal. It has the population of about 90 000 and the total city area is about 225 700 sq.km. The city was founded in 1856, it is located on the western bank of the Richelieu River. In the opposite bank there is a smaller site known as Saint-Jean or Saint-Jean d'Iberville. Saint-Jean was one of the major ports on the Richelieu River when the territories were under the French ownership. American Revolution caused a big flow of escaping loyalists who came and settled here, joining local families. During the 19th century Saint-Jean became a big settlement of French Canadians and Catholic. It is also famous as a stronghold for Liberal politicians.

One of its residents, Félix-Gabriel Marchand was a prime minister of Qebec in 1897. The development of trading relations between Canada and the USA caused the necessity of building canal and railway network that covered the local lands in 19th century. The region became a thriving economical centre of Canada after the first Canadian railway line reached Saint-Jean in 1836. It was Champlain And St. Lawrence Railroad that connected La Prairie with Saint-Jean. By 1843 the Chambly Canal was built. However after a flourishing success the town was unable to support industrial growth and was declined later in 19th century.

In the 20th century a few American multinational industries were attracted by Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railways and the region began to recover. In the 1980-s the secondary manufacturing was declined that had a negative influence to the growth of unemployment in the local areas. Mostly people were busy at nearby military base (Area Support Unit) and military college founded in 1952. One of the major agricultural enterprises in the country, Argiculture Canada, placed its horticultural research centre in the city. Saint-Jean now is a modern, developing city with noticeable economic growth during the latest years.

The flat areas of the city are now covered with high buildings, while various historic sites are rejuvenated. Currently the city is one of the centres of textile industry, foods and wood production.
